<p>The Rise Program provides microfinance to entrepreneurs struggling with addictions or mental illness. With emphatic support from well-placed leaders in business, health care, and philanthropy, Rise should have been well-positioned for success. And yet, the organization struggled to grow and achieve wide-reaching impact. In this talk, we show how we tackled this wicked problem with service design and business techniques, and discuss some of the lessons we learned along the way.</p>

<p>Silvia recently obtained a MSc.in Strategic Product Design from the Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands. She also Holds a title in Industrial Design from Los Andes University, Colombia, university where she was also a researcher focusing on sustainability.</p>

<p>The talk will focus on exploring the relationships in practice between business and design disciplines for service development. The topic will be explored with a particular emphasis on the contributions and limitations of design methods on defining customer value.</p>
<p>The study will present not only the analysis of a design process for service concept development, but also different perspectives of the benefits and limitations of service design methods. Furthermore, it will provide theoretical links between marketing and design concepts related to service development.</p>

<p>Can we really embed design in the public sector?</p>
<p>This presentation focuses on Skills Development Scotland&#8217;s journey to embed service design inside their organisation to produce new services around career guidance and skill development in Scotland.  Skills Development Scotland is a non-departmental public body which implements policy set by the Scottish Government. The journey began in 2008 when the nascent organisation used a design approach to establish its delivery model.  This presentation will outline the journey SDS has taken and discuss the challenges encountered so far. Sarah Drummond was invited during her Masters in Design Innovation to work alongside the organisation and will use the perspective gained from her work to reflect on the importance of design to Skills Development Scotland and the ways in which it can be embedded inside the organisation. The conclusion is an open question to the audience to stimulate conversation: how best can designers work and flourish within the public sector?</p>

<p>The Rise Program provides microfinance to entrepreneurs struggling with addictions or mental illness. With emphatic support from well-placed leaders in business, health care, and philanthropy, Rise should have been well-positioned for success. And yet, the organization struggled to grow and achieve wide-reaching impact. In this talk, we show how we tackled this wicked problem with service design and business techniques, and discuss some of the lessons we learned along the way.</p>
